Kansas is the geographical center of the country, one of its nicknames is the “Heart of America”. The name of the state was borrowed from the local Indians, who called themselves “Kanza”, which means “people of the south wind.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Kansas is home to a large number of historical sites, including the California and Oregon National Trails, the Santa Fe National Trail, Forts Scott and Larned, and the Tall grass Prairie National Preserve.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tall grass prairie<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Midway between Topeka and Wichita, Tall grass Prairie National Preserve protects the tall grass prairie ecosystem that used to cover most of the continent. Now the prairies occupy only 4% of the territory of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fort Scott<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Fort Scott, named after the commander of the battles during the Mexican-American War, General Winfield Scott, in the mid-19th century. Served as a military base. Today, the fort houses 20 historic structures, a parade ground, and five acres of restored tall grass prairie.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wichita<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In Wichita, see Old Town with its bars, restaurants, shops, and museums. Wichita is also known for its zoo – the largest in Kansas and one of the largest in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hutchinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center is located in Hutchinson.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dodge City<\/strong><\/h3>\n
