Astypalea – the islands of the Greek Dodecanese archipelago

If you look at Astypalea from a height, it seems like a butterfly. One wing of it is covered with forest, and the other is treeless and deserted. There are no snakes here, which is quite rare in the Aegean Islands. In general, the plants on the island, for the most part, are represented by shrubs, junipers and herbs, where flocks of sheep and goats graze. Many citrus fruits are growing in the valleys.

Entertainment and attractions of Astypalea

The island’s harbour Yialos was the first city in the region founded by the Italians. Its main attraction is the Archaeological Museum, which has a lot to see, and a line of eight picturesque windmills.

Chora is the capital of the island, built in the traditions of Greek island architecture, but with original wooden decoration – stairs and balconies. At the top of the hill is the castle of Kastro, which is considered one of the most beautiful in the Aegean. In 1956, it was damaged by an earthquake, but the castle has retained its appearance, as well as the churches of Evangelistria and Agios Eorios, which are now being restored.

From the town of Analipsis, it is easy to get to the preserved thermal baths in Talaras, as well as visit the basilicas of Agia Varvara and Kareklis. Moreover, here you can see the last windmill of the island above the bay of Ayia Foka.

The Church of Panagia Portaitis is considered the most beautiful temple of all the islands of the Dodecanese archipelago.

The east of the island is recognized as a National Park. Although no one lives here, there are several stalactite grottoes and picturesque sea caves on its territory.

Beaches

Livadi is the most famous beach on the island. It is located 20 minutes on foot or five minutes by bus from Chora. There are a large number of cafes, restaurants, and hotels. If you are in a quieter place, you can head to the southwest and swim in three small bays – Zanaki, Agios Konstandinos and Tilos.
