Ignalina seems to be specially created for nature lovers. One can go fishing, water sports, cycling or relax in one of the many rural estates. And also watch walking hares, foxes, elks, wild boars and, if you’re lucky, lynxes.
Every tourist who comes to Ignalina is struck by the fresh transparent air. It is not for nothing that the city coat of arms depicts white lilies, which grow only in very clean reservoirs.
What to watch
Not far from the city, in the village of Sheimates, there is an ancient pagan stone called Mokas. In the village of Ginuchay, there is a water mill, the only one that has survived in the region. Near the mill, there is a museum and a cafe.
On the shore of Lake Wushu, there is a wooden church of St. Joseph, which was built in 1757. An interesting fact: it was built without the use of nails.
From Mount Ladakalnis, a breathtaking view of the local landscapes opens from where you can see six lakes at once.
There are many ethnic villages in the Ignalina region, which help to feel the village life.
Ignalina is also considered the centre of winter sports in Lithuania. Here the snow falls very early and melts late. There are four slopes with lifts and snow cannons available for skiing. Every year the city hosts a variety of national and international competitions in biathlon, cross-country skiing and alpine skiing.
In the city’s sports and entertainment centre, you can work out in the gym, play tennis, swim in the pool and relax in the spa.
Bicycles can be rented in almost every settlement in the region. During the bike ride, you will see picturesque panoramas: hills, forests, rivers and water meadows, and lonely farms.
