Bordeaux – little Paris

Bordeaux is the capital of the Gironde department and all of Aquitaine. The French themselves call it “Sleeping Beauty”, “Little Paris” and “Port of the Moon”. The city is located on the banks of the Garonne River and is the largest in terms of area in all of France with a population of almost a million people. Bordeaux is known for its long and rich history with an English twist, which can be seen in the variety of attractions, cosy atmosphere, excellent botanical gardens, and of course, the famous Bordeaux wines, recognized as one of the best in the world.

Entertainment and attractions of Bordeaux

In Bordeaux, and especially in the old part of the city, a large number of monuments from different eras have been preserved.

Since 2007, the Port of the Moon has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List – it was from this area in the 1st century. BC e. colonization of the Aquitanian lands began. The beginning of the developing city was laid by the Gallo-Roman port of Burdigala at the crossroads of sea trade routes. Then there was Bordeaux, the medieval Eleanor of Aquitaine and three hundred years under English rule, in the 18th century – the city of Bohemia, the inspiration of Montaigne and Montesquieu, and then the 19th century – urbanization, the construction of bridges over the Garonne, the classical planning of boulevards and squares.

The Pont d’Aquitaine is the longest bridge in France. Pont Neuf (“new bridge”) – ironically, is the oldest bridge in Bordeaux, the old warship Colbert is moored next to it, and now it houses a museum and a restaurant.

In the pedestrian centre and the quarters of Saint-Pierre, Saint-Michel, Saint-Croix and Saint-Elali, you will find a large number of magnificent architectural monuments of various styles: from massive buildings of the early Middle Ages to lancet Gothic and Spanish arched galleries. From the Saint-Michel tower, you have a wonderful panoramic view of old Bordeaux.

Place Gambetta is the beginning of the elite districts of Bordeaux, extending to the north.

In the Public Gardens of Bordeaux, you can have a picnic on the grass or take a guided tour.

The main highlight of Bordeaux is excursions around the region with visits to wineries and tasting products.
