Transport in Athens

The Athens public transport system includes trams, buses and the metro. The metro operates from 5:00 to midnight: only three lines, a small fare (1.40 EUR) and magnificent museum stations with displays of ancient artefacts found during the period of laying lines. It is forbidden to drink, eat and litter in the subway. The centre of Athens is connected with the southern districts of the city by three tram lines. Trams are convenient to use for trips to the coast.

Public transport tickets costing EUR 1.40 are valid for 90 minutes with no change restrictions. There are travel cards for 24 hours, and they cost 4.50 EUR and 9 EUR for five days. They can be used on all types of transport – metro, buses, trolleybuses and trains. The exception is the routes that follow the airport and the Express X80 line. The fare for them is 4.50 EUR.

Tourists can buy a special travel card for 22 EUR. It includes travel from the airport to the centre and back as well as unlimited travel on all modes of transport for three days.

Athens municipal taxis (yellow) cost EUR 1.20 per landing, and EUR 0.60 per km during the day and EUR 1.20 at night. The minimum fare is 3.10 EUR. When boarding, make sure the driver turns on the meter.

Near the main city attractions, metro stations, parks and squares, there are more than 70 bike rental points. The price is 5 EUR for the whole day of rent, and there is no hourly rate.

Rent a Car

There are local (Morphis, Imperial Car Rental) and international companies (Avis, Hertz) in the car rental market. An economy class car in Athens will cost only 25-30 EUR per day. And given the problems with parking, it is worth taking just such compact cars.

Although the network of city parking lots is well developed, it is often difficult to find a free place. All parking lots are paid – from 0.50 to 6 EUR per hour and 25 EUR per day in the underground parking. Parking must be paid with particular cards which are sold in kiosks, cafes and shops.
